An introduction to the visual language of painting, including its technical, formal, and perceptual features: mark, color, surface, facture, touch, edge, and support. Students will practice the techniques and methods of various periods, with an emphasis on current approaches. Readings, lectures, and discussion will supplement studio problems, establishing an awareness of the context within which a painting is made and viewed today.
