A native of Scotland, Alan White came to the The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1972. At UTC, he holds the position of Professor of Art, having served for 20 years as the Head of the Department of Art. In 2004 – as was his plan after 20 years of administrative responsibilities – he stepped “up” to return to teaching and to painting. His teaching has been recognized in several awards: The University of Tennessee National Alumni Association Outstanding Teacher; The College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher; and UTC’s Student Government Association’s Outstanding Teacher award. In 2004, he was honored with the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding University Service. He has exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally. He also serves the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) as Institutional Representative and as a senior site-evaluator. Locally, he has served as a Board Member for the Association of Visual Arts (AVA), as an appointed member of the Advisory Committee of the Public Arts Plan for the city of Chattanooga, and on the Planning Forum for the recent renovation of the Hunter Museum of American Art. He was also an appointed member for the Cultural Action Plan for the city, now completed. He has served as an invited juror on many occasions, including for the City of Chattanooga, Office of the Mayor.
