Aggie Toppins

UC Foundation Assistant Professor, Graphic Design

MFA, the Maryland Institute College of Art
Aggie Toppins joined the faculty in 2012 after finishing her graduate degree at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Professor Toppins is principal of The Official Studio, a design practice that focuses on print, digital, and brand identity projects for small businesses and nonprofit organizations. She also founded The Unofficial Press to contextualize her independent studio activity in which she explores conceptually driven artist books and other projects that use graphic design to engage in cultural discourse.
I am interested in graphic design as both a social discipline and an intellectual pursuit. My practice is a hybrid one. I work with clients and independently of them.

When I work commercially, I am engaged in design's communicative function—giving visual form to ideas that meet specific public needs. When I work independently, I follow my own curiosities: exploring the material possibilities of books and printed multiples, shaping work that exposes the negotiability of reading, and pursuing the ways that consumption and privilege affect ideas about being in the world.
