Give to UTC

Andrew O'Brien

Assistant Professor, Photography and Media Art

MFA, University of Oregon, 2009
Prior to joining the faculty at UTC, Andrew O'Brien worked as Head Preparator for Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York City and as Preparator and Archivist for Honor Fraser Gallery in Los Angeles. His artistic practice is shaped by an early interest in science and the natural world, which led to an internship for NASA and Astronomy studies at the University of Arizona before he turned to photography exclusively. Other vital experience includes conservation work with the Bureau of Land Management in Arizona where he was exposed to the complex political and geographic environment of the US-Mexico border. He has exhibited at Archer Gallery, Clark College, Vancouver WA, Greenleaf Gallery, Whittier College, Whittier, CA, and Blackfish Gallery, Portland, OR among others.
My work is an exploration of constructed forms as they exist alongside typical plant life and local terrain. The meeting ground between these entities produces it's own vernacular, rich with spontaneous complex systems and unsettling imagery amongst our everyday surroundings. I alternate between studio and landscape environments in order to document, synthesize and re-construct the language that exists between these varied materials.
