Lauren Ruth

Assistant Professor, Sculpture

MFA, Sculpture, Cranbrook Academy of Art
Lauren Ruth joined the faculty of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2013 and has previously taught at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Ruth works in a variety of media including sculpture and performance and has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, the Corcoran College of Art & Design, the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Dartmouth College, and Grizzly Grizzly, among others. Ruth is also co-director of The Shaft, a mobile gallery as work of art originally founded in an elevator.
My process is motivated by the provocative potential of material and site, and I create sculptures, participatory objects and performances that implicate the viewer as part of the work. Drawing on celebrations, sporting events, and games, I construct settings and scenarios that border on the grandiose and the absurd. The work encourages spontaneous participation and acts as a social site or point of contact. Riding the line between plausibility and pretense, the work addresses expectations of success, social and gender hierarchies, and the value of convivial exchange.
