Shane Ward joined the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2018. Prior to UTC, he taught at the Paducah School of Art and Design, Whitman College, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has exhibited his artwork nationally and internationally and has been an artist-in-residence at Elsewhere Artist Collaborative, Acre Projects, NES Artist Residency in Iceland, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art.
My sculpture practice (which sometimes involves site-specific installation, video, photography, performance, drawing, and creative writing) takes up themes of violence, political identity, commerce, romance, trauma, and war. I think of my practice as a sustained inquiry into the nature of victory: its relationship to liberty, and its ultimate fragility. In recent years, I’ve asked after and troubled the relationship between the grave and the monument, the mine and the jewelry box, the wound and the mend. My most current projects are preoccupied with resource extraction, currency production, toxicity, and authenticity. Juxtaposing dangerous and inert materials, obscuring the line between genuine and counterfeit objects, and exploiting the rhetorical surfaces of our social environs, I am investigating the tributaries, currents, and consequences of cultural value.
